The country exported wine products worth over US$ 800 million annually in 2011. Italy is an important wine producer because of its quality wines produced with grapes grown on its land. Winemaking has been a vital part of Italian culture since ancient times. The earliest written accounts of grape growing were found on an Italian island called Liguria which was part of the Roman Empire during the third millennium BC. The Romans found wine to be a very tasty food that complimented their diets. It was therefore not surprising that they imported huge quantities of this drink from southern Italy where it was produced at home. This practice continued until the end of century BC when they decided to export wines directly to the markets where demand was greater than supply options for their people. During this time period the Romans built roads throughout Europe to move large amounts of Napa Valley wines from southern Italy to market places such as Venezia where wine was sold directly to consumers in Venezia where it could be purchased by local merchants who needed more than just wholesale or retail markets for their wines. The empire’s influence continues today through trade relations with other countries like France and Spain who import large quantities of wine from Italy each year as well as traditional wines made by vineyards located on Italian islands like Emilia Romagna or Friuli-Venezia Giulia . In 2010 shipping companies worldwide exported over 30 million bottles worth US$ 10 billion which represents over 60% increase over 2009 . Despite this huge growth in exports Italian wine is still very small in terms of volume but it is growing rapidly in terms of value . In 2011 there were 813 wineries producing around 740 million bottles valued at US$ 10 billion while 50% of those houses produce less than 100 thousand bottles per year meaning that most wineries grow more than 10 000 bottles per month . Wine consumption is growing rapidly in Europe with almost one out of every five Europeans using bottled water instead of tap water . In October 2012 KPMG released new drinks category report titled “Golden Age Of Bottled Water” showing how bottled water sales are continuing to grow rapidly and how the category is predicted to continue to grow in the US and Canada.
