Chief Product Officer
In addition to the generic functions CPOs provide, or oversee, they also often take on the following roles that are more specific to product management:
Some companies have a head of product who is not responsible for day-to-day operations but who works with the CPO to set direction and strategy.
The most common titles for this role are “Chief Product Officer” or “VP of Product.”
The “chief product officer” title is being used in an increasingly broad range of industries, and is sometimes used in conjunction with a corporate structure that has a CEO and COO. The CPO is then either the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO) depending on the industry and type of company.
As of 2018, there were approximately 1,600 chief product officers working in S&P 500 companies, according to data from LinkedIn. Their job titles vary by company, with positions like VP of product management, director of product management, director of product development, director of product marketing, and chief customer officer all being used for this role. The highest ranking CPOs are paid in the high six- or low seven-figure range; however, the median salary for the roughly 4% of S&P 500 companies that have a CPO is $180,000. The percentage of Fortune 100 companies with a CPO increased from 2% in 2012 to 23% in 2017 (from 25 to 67 companies).
