Step 1: Determine the job’s environment
All tech companies have a unique culture. Some are more laid-back, some are more aggressive. Some are more collaborative, some are more competitive. Regardless of what your company’s culture is, you must determine how it will impact the type of person who would thrive there.
For example, let’s say you have three different candidates for a VP of operations in a product company. One candidate is from a company where they were very collaborative and worked on a team with their peers. Another candidate is from a company where they were more aggressive and worked in a high-pressure environment. The third candidate is from a company where they were laid-back and worked on their own.
You can see that based on the candidate’s past experience, each applicant will be better suited for one environment or another. This exercise will help you identify the 3-4 traits that are most important for your environment and ensure that you are hiring someone who best fits that mold.
Step 2: Determine the job’s level of responsibility
The level of responsibility for the job role is another thing that you must determine before you begin your search for the right candidate. There are some jobs that will require a high degree of responsibility while others will require less responsibility. The level of responsibility in the position can be an indicator of how much authority an employee has in making decisions and implementing strategies to drive growth.
Step 3: Determine how the role fits with your overall strategy
This process can be somewhat difficult, but it’s important because no matter how qualified someone may be for a role at your company, they must also fit with your overall strategy in order to be successful. If you have multiple roles open at your company and one role fits into your long-term strategy but another role does not, you might want to consider hiring someone for the role that does fit with your strategy first.

However, authority can be misconstrued. For example, the VP of sales will have more authority than the VP of product, but the VP of sales will still need to work with the VP of product on product decisions because the VP of sales will need to market the final product to their customers.
