A short history of San Miguel Corporation


The history of San Miguel Brewery, now San Miguel Corporation started in 1890 when three enterprising young men, Enrique María Barretto de Ycaza, José Antonio Navarro, and Ramón Santo Tomás purchased the old brewery established in 1857 by British brewer James Burton.

Their new company was “La Fábrica de Cerveza de San Miguel” (San Miguel Brewery). The brewery’s first product was a Pale Pilsen Beer. And handcrafted using the English technique of cold fermentation.

The recipe was based on imported malts and hops from England, creating the distinctive taste that has become synonymous with the San Miguel brand. The beer was available in bottles, then later in cans and on draft.

Business growth

The business grew rapidly and soon included a distillery and bottling plant. Further, the demand for their products grew even faster, resulting in the construction of a new brewery. In 1918, La Fábrica de Cerveza de San Miguel became the first Philippine company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

In 1925, it began selling its products in East Asia through an export subsidiary set up in Hong Kong. During World War II, when the Philippines became cut off from imported raw materials and supplies, San Miguel Brewery had to manufacture most of its own ingredients and supplies needed to produce beer.

After the war ended, they resumed normal business operations by acquiring new lands and extending their distribution network. By 1949, San Miguel Brewery became one of the top ten breweries in the world and has reached its peak production of 50 million liters per year.

In 1963, San Miguel Brewery merged with another leading beverage firm Coca Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc to form Associated Breweries Incorporated (later renamed San Miguel Corporation). Further, it was incorporated as a holding company for all its brewing interests in Asia.

So, in 1987, it established its first overseas investment in Indonesia by acquiring PT Gudang Garam Tbk (now PT SMI), Indonesia’s leading cigarette manufacturer since 1894. It is now one of the top three cigarette manufacturers in Indonesia.

In 1994 it acquired a controlling interest in PT Multi Bintang Indonesia Tbk., Indonesia’s largest brewery (later renamed PT Multi Bintang Indonesia after taking over SMI assets) which included a joint venture with Heineken Netherlands BV (47%) to form SMI-
