What is the VP Product Headspace?
The VP product headspace is a chemical subsystem in a process plant. It is a place to merge the technology and the business.
The VP product headspace is not a single individual. It’s an organizational structure in the plant, which can be of several layers, each layer further away from the decision-making seat. Each layer has its influence on business goals, technology, and quality objectives.
Understanding the VP Headspace Organization Chart
It’s important to understand that there is no one single individual in charge of all of this, as it would be too much to manage. We have seen organizations with one or two people as VP chemical product headspace.
They are Chief Chemist and Chief of Technology, for example. But the VP chemical headspace is an organizational structure in a process plant, which can be of several layers of management. Each layer has its influence on business goals, technology, and quality objectives.
Business Goals Layer
The Business Goals layer is by Strategic Planning, which is the highest level of strategic planning in a company. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and/or the Executive Board are responsible for that. After that are the top management (Chief Operating Officer or COO), Quality Management, Operations Management, and so on.
The business goals can be set by the sales department and/or trading department. For example: “Increase sales by 10%”, “Increase sales by 10% while not increasing cost” or “Decrease cost by 15%.” These are examples of business goals.
The VP Headspace Layer is by the business goals. If the Business Goals Layer sets a goal of improving product quality, then the VP Headspace Layer can influence the organization to achieve that goal. But it cannot influence the top management to change the business goal.
Technology Layer
The Technology layer is by Operations. Operations decide on what technology will be in a process plant, what engineering is needed, and how much time and money should be on technology improvements.
The VP Headspace Layer is by the Technology layer. If the Technology layer sets a goal of improving product quality or reducing energy consumption, then the VP Headspace Layer can influence the organization to achieve that goal.
But it cannot influence operations to change their decision on what technology will be in a process plant, what engineering is needed, and how much time and money should be on technology improvements.
Quality Management Layer
The Quality Management layer is by Quality Assurance. Quality Assurance decides what quality policy will be in a process plant, who ensures that the quality policy is followed, and how much time and money should be on quality improvement.
This is by the Chief Quality Officer (CQO). The Quality Management layer is responsible for ensuring that the quality policy is followed.
The VP Product Headspace Layer is by the Quality Management layer. If the Quality Management layer sets a goal of improving product quality, then the VP Product Headspace Layer can influence the organization to achieve that goal.
